Reinhold Friedrich

They say that as you get older, you regress to your prior interests. (Or if they don’t, they ought to.) One of the joys in listening to Claudio Abbado’s five-DVD set conducting the Lucerne Festival Orchestra was hearing trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich and hearing him in some nicely varied repertoire (La Mer, Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, Mahler’s Fifth, Bruckner’s Seventh). He leads without dominating, which is an admirable trait and a difficult line to walk (and many other cliches, I’m sure). Here he is in the Finale of the Second Brandenburg Concerto, playing nicely with others.
