One of those weeks

As we close a ridiculously busy week, I can only note that everyone else is scrambling, too, audiences included. Tenor and blogger Nicholas Phan makes his Chicago recital debut tonight at the U. of C.’s Mandel Hall (someone plugged him in his Chicago operatic debut), and it’s only $10 and [UPDATE] the Chicago Brass Ensemble and organist David Schrader features outstanding young brass players conducted by CSO hornist David Griffin and CSO principal trumpeter Chris Martin Sunday at St. James Cathedral.

Monday holds the Chicago Sinfonietta’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. tribute at Orchestra Hall with Sphinx Competition winner Patrice Jackson and a “special guest” to read Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech; Fulcrum Point plays Stockhausen and Richard Danielpour (which must be the first time they’ve been paired) at the Harris Theater and dal niente brings a free Saariaho Portrait to the U. of C., both on Tuesday. Stockhausen’s Aries has been choreographed by Melissa Thodos for her eponymous company to premiere at Fulcrum Point’s concert, and I await the day that dal niente gives an Ingolf Dahl portrait, to view the “dal plays Dahl” posters.

The Killers also play the UIC Pavilion that Tuesday. Tickets start at $39 if you don’t want to sit by your friends, and $84 if you do.

Below: Thodos Dance Chicago excerpts. There really is something about a little black dress.

And in honor of MLK Day and the impending inauguration, remove your hat, place your hand over your heart, and sing along to the National Anthem as performed by several lead trumpeters.
